Equine Physiotherapy

Personalised physiotherapy for your horse

Every horse is different, and equine physiotherapy is tailored to their individual needs, workload and rehabilitation goals. Whether you have concerns about your horse’s movement, are supporting their recovery following an injury, or want to help them maintain their comfort and function, physiotherapy can form part of an appropriate care and rehabilitation plan.

An appointment begins with a discussion about your horse and any concerns you have noticed. This may include changes in movement or performance, difficulties with particular activities, previous injuries, medical history and your horse’s current workload. Any relevant veterinary advice or treatment will also be taken into consideration.

This is followed by a physical assessment to evaluate your horse’s movement and musculoskeletal function. Sarah will explain her findings and discuss suitable treatment options with you, taking your horse’s needs and your goals into account.

What might treatment involve?

Treatment is individualised and may include a combination of the following, depending on the assessment findings and what is appropriate for your horse.

Soft tissue massage

Hands-on techniques aimed at addressing areas of muscle tension and soft-tissue restriction, supporting comfort and movement.

IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM) – the use of specialist instruments as part of soft-tissue treatment where appropriate.

Electrotherapy

Selected electrotherapy techniques (including Class IV Laser Therapy) may be incorporated into treatment when indicated.

Rehabilitation exercises

Exercises designed around your horse to support mobility, strength, coordination and controlled progression through rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation tailored to your horse

Rehabilitation is not just about what happens during a physiotherapy session. Having a clear plan for the time between appointments can be an important part of working towards your goals.

Sarah will provide relevant exercises and advice tailored to your horse’s needs, current capabilities and stage of recovery. Where rehabilitation is required following injury or surgery, the approach should take account of veterinary recommendations and progress at a suitable pace.

Physiotherapy may also support horses working towards a return to normal activity, with treatment and exercise plans adapted to their individual circumstances.

Working with your veterinary team

Equine physiotherapy should complement appropriate veterinary care. Relevant veterinary referral, consent and clinical guidance will be discussed as needed, particularly where your horse has an injury, an ongoing medical condition or is recovering from surgery.

Please share any relevant veterinary information before your appointment so that treatment can be planned appropriately.
